What Happens to Your Lashes After a Lift

What Happens to Your Lashes After a Lift

Leaving the studio with freshly lifted, tinted lashes is such a lovely feeling, and I always love seeing the moment a client catches a glimpse of herself in the mirror. If it's your first time, though, the changes over the following days and weeks can feel a little surprising. So I wanted to walk you through what's actually happening, what's completely normal, and what genuinely helps your lashes stay looking their best.

The first couple of days: let everything settle

In the first day or two after a lash lift, industry aftercare guidance consistently recommends keeping lashes dry, avoiding steam, and being gentle around the eye area while the curl sets. Water exposure during this window is the most common reason a fresh lift doesn't hold as well as it could. General beauty industry practice also suggests avoiding sleeping face down on that first night, since pressure and friction can potentially affect a curl before it has fully set, though this is widely shared trade advice rather than something unique to any one treatment. The tint benefits from the same care, as moisture can affect how the colour develops in those early hours.

Days three to seven: the curl finds its natural home

Once the initial settling period passes, the curl softens very slightly from its just lifted peak, which honestly many women prefer. It looks less theatrical and more like your lashes simply grew this way. The tint also shows its truest depth during this phase, now that everything has had time to breathe. This is usually the week clients tell me they've barely touched their mascara, because the lifted root and deeper tone are already doing the work. If you do reach for mascara, water based formulas are gentler on a lift than oil based ones, as oils are one of the main things that gradually loosen a curl over time.

What makes a lift fade sooner than it should?

Oil is the main one. Skincare that migrates toward the eye area, cleansing oils, and certain sunscreens can all gradually weaken the curl. Beyond product choice, the condition of your lashes coming into the appointment matters too. Lashes that are dry or have been through a lot of product build up can respond differently to a lift solution, which influences how the result holds. Lash growth itself is also easy to overlook as a factor. As your natural lashes grow, the lifted section moves further from the root and the curl appears less pronounced. That's simply biology rather than the treatment wearing off, and it accounts for a lot of why things look different at week four compared to week two. Our lash lift and tint includes a nourishing lash treatment designed to strengthen and condition lashes, which supports the lift through its full life.

How long do results realistically last?

A lash lift and tint lasts up to 6 to 8 weeks. The tint and the curl do have different lifespans, though. Tint lightens gradually with water exposure, heat, and everyday life, so most women find the lift still looks beautiful at six weeks while the tint has faded a little earlier, particularly if they swim regularly or spend time outdoors. If keeping that deep, defined look going for the full cycle matters to you, it's worth discussing your options at your next appointment.

Why does my lift look different from someone else's?

Because your lashes are uniquely yours. The natural length, thickness, texture, and growth direction of your lashes all influence how a lift processes and how the finished result appears. Someone with long, fine lashes may achieve a sweeping curl; someone with shorter or coarser lashes may see something more subtle but equally flattering and equally right for them. The silicone shield used during the treatment also shapes the degree of curl, with different sizes producing different results. Generally speaking, a more petite shield tends to create a tighter curl and a larger one a softer, more elongated sweep. Over 20 years in the beauty industry, from makeup artistry through to specialising in brows and lashes, has shown me that the most beautiful results come from really looking at the person in front of you and responding to what their lashes actually need.

Nourishing your lashes between appointments

Keeping lashes nourished between appointments helps them stay strong and hold a lift beautifully next time around. A simple lash serum or a light application of castor oil at the base of lashes in the evening is a widely used approach in the industry. Try to avoid very hot water directly on your lashes when cleansing. If you're a regular sauna visitor, that steam and heat can gradually relax a curl over time, so it's worth factoring into when you rebook. Coming in with conditioned, healthy lashes means the treatment can do its best work right from the start.

Is it normal for lashes to look slightly different on each eye?

Completely. Most of us have a naturally dominant eye with slightly different lash length, density, or growth direction, and a lift can make that pre-existing difference a little more visible. It's not a sign anything went wrong. If one eye has a noticeably different curl, it's always worth mentioning at your next appointment so the shield selection can be adjusted to suit. Persistent redness, tenderness, or any swelling beyond the very first day is worth checking with your GP, as these can occasionally indicate a sensitivity response, which is rare but possible with any cosmetic treatment.

Frequently asked questions

When can I wear mascara after a lash lift and tint?

General industry guidance is to keep lashes dry for the first day or two while the curl sets, and mascara counts as something to hold off on during that window. When you do use it, water based formulas are kinder to the curl than oil based ones, and you may find you reach for mascara far less once a lift and tint is in place. The combined service takes 45 minutes and costs $100, so it's a fairly efficient swap for a daily mascara routine.

Will my tint fade before my curl does?

Generally, yes. Tint gradually lightens with water, UV exposure, and daily contact, which is why it often fades noticeably before the curl has grown out across the full 6 to 8 week window. How quickly depends on lifestyle factors like swimming, steam, and sun exposure. If you find tint fades quickly for you, it's worth mentioning at your appointment so Kasia can factor that into the conversation.

How soon can I have another lash lift?

Industry practice is to wait until the previous lift has grown out significantly before having another one, which aligns with the 6 to 8 week lifespan of the treatment. Processing a lift on lashes that have been recently treated can lead to brittleness over time. Nourishing your lashes in between and giving them time to recover is what keeps them healthy for repeated treatments across many months and years. The lash lift and tint at Soulsis is $100 for 45 minutes and includes a conditioning lash treatment to help support that ongoing health.

Does adding a tint make a big difference to the finished look?

Meaningfully, yes. Without tint, lighter lashes can look shorter and less defined even when they're perfectly lifted, because the pale tips visually disappear. Tint brings the full length of each lash into view and adds real depth. At Soulsis, the lash lift and tint is offered as a single 45-minute service for exactly this reason, with the tint customised to your colouring so everything looks natural and intentional rather than overdone.
